Kinmon Gakuen in San Francisco’s Japantown is excited to introduce a new program—the Saturday Afternoon Class—designed to help children learn Japanese in a natural and enjoyable way. While our regular morning classes focus on building foundational language skills, the afternoon session offers a special opportunity for students to experience the joy of “using” Japanese through culture- and play-based activities.
What makes this class unique is its hands-on, experiential approach—no textbooks required. Each week, students participate in activities based on different themes, such as origami, seasonal crafts, and traditional Japanese games. For example, during the New Year season, students may enjoy kakizome (first calligraphy of the year) or fukuwarai, and in spring they might create origamior art projects themed around flowers. The curriculum is designed to help children experience Japanese culture and the seasons while naturally engaging with the language.
We believe learning continues when it’s fun. Through play and creative activities, students experience the excitement of “I did it!”—small successes that build confidence. These positive experiences encourage children to use Japanese beyond the classroom and make the language a natural part of their daily lives.
The program welcomes children from ages 5 through high school, regardless of level. Mixed-age activities help students develop cooperation and social skills, while also strengthening communication ability, creativity, and self-expression—all important aspects of their overall growth.
The Saturday Afternoon Class is more than just a language lesson. It is a place where students can connect with friends, experience Japanese culture firsthand, and enjoy meaningful time together. At Kinmon Gakuen, we remain committed to creating an environment where children feel connected to the Japanese language, enjoy learning, and build confidence through meaningful experiences.
